Meet EVELYN STEPP
Name: Evelyn Stepp Origin: Kentucky Occupation: Youth Director
How you came to know Christ
Both my parents raised me to know and understand the word of God and to have a personal relationship with Christ. Growing up, I was homeschooled, so my parents thought it was very important that I was very involved in youth activities at our local church. I have always known Christ to be real and alive in my life. I don’t remember a moment or point where I didn’t have the Spirit of God within me, directing me and guiding me. That’s not to say that life has been perfect by any means, or that I haven’t wondered about our vast Universe and the Maker of such a grand thing as human life. However, I have been aware of Christ’s love, friendship and guidance my whole life for as far back as I can remember.
How you discovered FSBC of Hollywood
I moved to Los Angeles in 2011, and I was actively seeking a Bible-based church. It was several months before I went to First Southern Baptist Church of Hollywood (FSBC of Hollywood ) simply because, in L.A., there are many churches to choose from, with many different titles. However, I wasn’t interested in titles, grandeur, or nice restrooms. One day my roommate and I walked by FSBC of Hollywood and noticed, non-coincidently, it was on the very same street where I lived at the time. I was seeking a church where I felt the Holy Spirit was welcome, the Bible was soundly taught and community outreach, with unconditional love, was a must. I wanted to be in a place where I could grow spiritually, give of my time to others, and be of service. Pastor Gary and Argelia Tibbs, from the very beginning, welcomed me with an open heart and, to this day, continue to express their love and support. For me, they are more than just my Pastor and Pastor’s wife; they are my spiritual parents. I thank God for them and I can see why He chose them to lead this church. Everyone here made me feel so welcome and, although I didn’t become a member right away, and after going home to Kentucky for a long visit, I found myself back in this huge heart of a church as soon as I got back to Los Angeles. I finally found a place to call home where I could serve my community through my church. I thank God for First Southern Baptist Church of Hollywood, and for every challenge along the way.
I am predominantly involved in youth ministries across the board. Anything pertaining to the youth I have a hand in: Sunday school, Youth Camp, Youth Trips, Plays, Skits, etc. I sing in the choir, and help with the Media Ministry and community events.
With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, my long-term vision for our youth at First Southern Baptist Church of Hollywood is that we would have enough adult and youth partnerships to facilitate our youth ministries; to engage our youth by providing regular youth group meetings and outreach events; and to create an open environment where all students feel accepted and respected. We want to teach them the Christian faith through Bible study, youth group talks, retreats, and personal relationships. We strive to build them up through mentoring, counseling, and leadership teams. We do all of this so that they may fully live for Christ and serve others through life worship, education, local service projects, mission trips, and student-led programs. “…that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” ~Ephesians 3:17-19
